Foreword

Next time you are walking through a shopping mall or down Main Street in a town most anywhere in the world, look around at the names above the stores. Then cast your mind back to the names you saw over those stores 10, 20, 30 years ago. It can be virtually guaranteed that more than 90% of the names above those storefronts will be different.

“...in the ever-evolving world of work, understanding and achieving resilience has never been more important.”

It is not just in the world of retail that we see massive turnover of names, brands, and companies. A vast body of research examining corporate longevity suggests that companies come and go, their fortunes wax and wane. Only a select few demonstrate real staying power. This is a fact of corporate life. But for many organizations, it need not be that way. They can embrace change, technology, and innovation. They can prioritize their customers and employees and create an organizational culture where change and transformation are integral pieces of their corporate DNA.

As we have seen amidst the challenges of the past several years, some organizations intrinsically have this sort of resilience in their DNA. Building Resilient Organizations is focused on identifying what sets these enterprises apart, exploring the nature of resilience for organizations and how organizations can follow suit to harness the power of transformation to excel against the challenges of tomorrow. Along the way, we discover some inspiring global examples of resilient projects in practice and some novel thinking for leaders to consider what is really needed to be a resilient organization.

None of this is easy. But, in the ever-evolving world of work, understanding and achieving resilience has never been more important. We hope that Building Resilient Organizationswill enable you to embed transformation and resilience into your organization.
